Shopping Used? Use This Checklist.

Published on Aug 23, 2024 by CarShop

Purchasing a used car can be a great way to save money, but it's important to ensure that the vehicle is in good condition. In this post, we'll guide you through the essential parts of a vehicle you should check when buying a used car, wherever you may shop.

Exterior
Body Condition

Look for any signs of rust, dents, or scratches. While minor cosmetic issues may not affect the car's performance, small issues can get larger over time.

Tires

Check the tires for even wear and sufficient tread depth. Uneven wear can indicate alignment or suspension issues.

Lights

Make sure all lights (headlights, tail lights, brake lights, and turn signals) are working properly.

Interior
Upholstery

Inspect the seats and floor for any stains, tears, or burns. Also, check the condition of the seat belts.

Electronics

Verify that the radio, air conditioning, heater, aux, and all other electronic systems are functioning correctly.

Odor

A musty smell can indicate water leaks or flood damage.

Under the Hood
Fluids

Check the oil, transmission fluid, coolant, and brake fluid. They should be at the proper level, and their color and consistency should be normal.

Battery

Look at the battery for any signs of corrosion. If possible, check the battery's age. Most car batteries last between 3-5 years.

Belts and Hoses

Inspect the belts and hoses for any signs of wear, such as cracks or fraying.

On the Road
Engine

Listen for any unusual noises when the engine is running. The car should accelerate smoothly and without any catching or hesitation.

Brakes

During a test drive, the car should stop smoothly and straight, without any squeaking or grinding noises.

Steering and Handling

The vehicle should respond well to steering and not pull to either side.

Luckily, at CarShop, we have a 109-point checklist that all of our Certified vehicles must pass.

Our ASE-certified technicians delve deep into each vehicle’s mechanics, electronics, and safety systems, scrutinizing everything from the engine’s performance to the functionality of the brakes to uncover any hidden issues that may not be apparent at first glance.

Plus, when you shop with CarShop, Carfax reports are free for all our vehicles.

We do this because we want you to rest assured that when you buy Certified, you’re purchasing a top-of-the-line used vehicle.
